Some flight connections must be made with what’s known as an airport transit, or the act of connecting between two different airports that serve the same city. For example, traveling between London Heathrow and London Gatwick, or between New York JFK and La Guardia.
These type of connections are inadvisable and only recommended in the worst case scenarios, such as, there’s no other option. If you must transit between airports, it’s recommended you leave yourself at least a full half-day for the trip since any number of factors can impede the progress of getting to the next flight. Transit visas may be necessary in some countries as well.
If you’re considering an airport transit to save a little money, unless it’s a vast savings, don’t do it. A couple hundred dollars won’t save you the hassle of getting your bags, getting your transportation, transiting across a major metropolitan area and rechecking your bags at the next airport.
However…
… this may give you an opportunity to spend a little time in a city you’ve never been. Discuss the situation of an extended airport transit (or perhaps a stopover) with your Personal Travel Consultant. They may tell you something about the situation you didn’t expect.
